God’s Promise Still Stands

1 Kings 1–2; 2 Samuel 7:12–13

There’s something unsettling about seasons of transition. When one chapter closes and another begins, questions naturally rise: What’s next? Who will lead? Will God’s plan hold steady? The opening chapters of 1 Kings feel a lot like that: full of tension, uncertainty, and the ache of change.

David is near the end of his life in 1 Kings 1, and his son Adonijah tries to take the throne by force. What could have ended in chaos is steadied by God’s hand. Through the prophet Nathan and Bathsheba’s bold reminder, David honors the Lord’s promise, and Solomon is anointed king. Trumpets sound, the people rejoice, and Israel sees God’s Word fulfilled right before their eyes.

In 1 Kings 2, David offers Solomon his final instructions: “Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God…” (vv. 2–3). It’s a passing of the torch, not just of kingship but of covenant faithfulness. And it ties back to the heart of God’s promise in 2 Samuel 7:12–13, where the Lord told David that one of his sons would build a house for His name, and God would establish his throne forever.

Solomon’s reign was the first step in that fulfillment, but the greater promise reached far beyond him. Centuries later, another Son of David (Jesus)would come. Unlike Solomon, His kingdom would never falter, and His throne would never be shaken. He is the greater King, the one who embodies God’s covenant faithfulness in full.

When I read these chapters, I’m reminded that even when leadership changes, when life feels uncertain, and when circumstances shift, God’s promises never waver. His plan is never interrupted. He holds the story, and His Word always comes to pass.

What unsettled place in my life do I need to entrust to God’s steady promises today? Just as God’s covenant to David was fulfilled in Solomon and ultimately in Jesus, I can trust that His Word will stand in my life too. The uncertainty I feel is not bigger than the faithfulness of my God.

Lord, thank You for being faithful through every season of change. When life feels unsettled, help me to anchor my heart in Your unshakable promises. Teach me to trust that You are still writing my story and that Jesus, the true King, reigns forever. Amen.
