Remembering Who Holds the Story
2 Samuel 23-24 | Micah 1:2-3 | John 2:19-22
When I think about the end of a season, the final chapter of something that’s shaped my life, I’m often caught between gratitude and regret. There’s a bittersweet ache in looking back, wondering if I used the time well. Did I honor God in it? Did I listen when He was speaking?
David’s life gives us this same reflection moment. At the end of his story, we’re reminded that God’s faithfulness spans every high and low.
In 2 Samuel 23, David speaks his last words, declaring that his reign was established not by his own power but by God’s covenant. These aren’t boastful goodbyes; they’re acknowledgments that the Lord’s hand was in every victory and that His word never failed.
Then in 2 Samuel 24, we see David stumble again when he takes a census, trusting in numbers instead of God’s provision. Judgment follows, yet God’s mercy shines through when David builds an altar, offering sacrifices that turn away the plague.
Micah 1:2–3 reminds us that God is not distant. He comes down, walking among the high places of the earth to bring both justice and redemption. And in John 2:19–22, Jesus declares that the true temple is not a building but His own body—a foreshadowing that His death and resurrection would become the ultimate altar where sin is dealt with once and for all.
God is a God who comes down, not just to observe, but to act. He meets us in our victories and our failures, redeeming both for His glory. Like David, we can look back at our story and see His fingerprints even in the places we wish we could rewrite.
When I look back on my life, am I seeing only my successes and failures, or am I seeing God’s faithful presence in both? Spend time this week reflecting on your own “final words” for this season of life. What can you declare about God’s faithfulness, and how can you step forward trusting Him for what’s next?
Lord,
Thank You for being the God who comes down into my story.
Help me to see Your hand in every chapter, both the ones that shine and the ones that ache.
Let my life always point back to Your faithfulness, until the day I see You face to face.
Amen.
